FindMyWay is a pilot project funded by Innoveco and the Department of Mechanical Engineering of University of Thessaly. From the side of the University, Dr. Lymperopoylos, Dr. Saharidis (Scientific Officer and Coordinator) and Dr. Pantelis have organised a research team (under the name “FindMyWay in Greece”) that consists of undergraduate and graduate students.
The ultimate goal of this consortium is to create an open source web application that will provide a sophisticated journey/route planner that will include all public transport means in Greece, and will help in the development of tourism sector.
The final web application of FindMyWay will provide free services to find routes moving from one point to any other within Greece, combining all available public transport means. Up to now, the results of the colaboration of “FindMyWay in Greece” research team with Innoveco are the following pilot applications:
✓ FindMyWay in Volos which provides route planning only for municipal bus in Volos
✓ FindMyWay in Attika which provides route planning only for municipal bus in Attica, and
✓ FindMyWay in Creta which provides route planning only for municipal bus in Creta.
These three applications, together with the experience gained by the research team “FindMyWay in Greece”, are important elements for the developemnt of the final and more complicated product, which will combine more than one public transport covering all cities in Greece. Furthermore, the final product apart from routing data, will include geo-information as well as timetable data (times of arrival and departure), information important for a tourist who wants to plan the best possible journey. Note that specific elements of these 3 pilots, have been developed by students of the research team, under their diploma thesis.
In the same cooperation framework, Innoveco and the Department of Mechanical Engineering of University of Thessaly, are developing Touristic Guide platform, which is a pilot project under the guidance of Dr. Saharidis (Principal Investigator and Coordinator) and invlolves the development of a Decision Support System (Touristic Guide DSS), that could be used in compination with FindMyWay or even similar platforms.
More specifically, in Touristic Guide DSS (a beta version is available here) user can create a profile by selecting various attractions (points of interest) that wants to visit and providing desired times of departure as well as recommended budget. Based on these preferences the DSS recommends the best available journey, maximizing the number of points of interest within the time and budget limits provided by the user.
This software will be a key element of the final Touristic Guide platform, which in turn – combined with the results of other projects – will be incorporated into the final FindMyWay platform. Note that specific elements of the pilot Touristic Guide DSS have been developed by students of the research team, under their diploma thesis.
